Background


In 2022, Uniting successfully tendered for New Builds and Refurbishment grant funding through the WA Department of Communities Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP) Grant Funding initiative, towards the capital costs of construction.

In June 2022, the City of Fremantle granted planning approval for the transitional housing facility development.

In December 2023, Uniting was awarded Lotterywest grant funding that will contribute towards various supplementary costs including PV solar, landscaping, security and CCTV.

Following the recent tender period, Uniting has identified a preferred builder and is in the process of securing the required gap funding to enable this ‘shovel ready’ project to commence construction.

Target group

Vulnerable women aged 55 and over experiencing or at risk of homelessness in WA.

Project summary and features

  1. Refurbishments to existing heritage building

  2. Construction of a new, transitional housing facility will include:
    • 12 bedrooms with ensuites
    • communal indoor and outdoor spaces
    • open plan living areas
    • counselling and group therapy rooms
    • staff facilities
    • landscaping
    • car parking.

  3. Trauma informed design that promotes:
    • healing and connection amongst residents
    • provides safe and secure accommodation for vulnerable women

  4. Access to wraparound support to be provided by Uniting

  5. Located 600 metres from Fremantle City Centre.
    Within easy walking distance of:
    • medical and health services
    • daily shopping needs
    • recreation areas
    • high frequency public transport services.

  6. Environmentally Sustainable Design features include:
    • water-wise gardens
    • rooftop solar panels
    • solar passive design to ensure energy efficiency

  7. Overall site area is 1,262sqm.
